Welcome 2014 Linky: Fun and Family

I am linking up with Blog Hoppin’ to welcome the New Year!
Up today is Fun and Family.
I actually rang in the New Year in VT with a bunch of old friends and new!   I even tried snowboarding.  Umm….I need more lessons.
Winter fire pit in the backyard.

We played Cards Against Humanity in the evenings in the cabin…it is not for the P.C. or PG crowd.  Think of it as The Tosh.O version of Apples to Apples.  My friends made fun of me because I did not know what a lot of the words that were on the cards!   So this was also a bit of an educational game for me, too.  Everyone enjoyed a good laugh at my expense, but I did not mind at all!   We all laughed.

View from the deck.
Vermont was just so beautiful and peaceful.  It snowed all the time and made everything look like a winter wonderland.   I am so glad I went.
I have been traveling a lot more in 2013 and I love it.   I finally have people to travel to or travel with.  At 35 and single, I was running out of travel companions where I would not be crashing a family vacation!  I hope to continue all this traveling and meeting new people.  I would love to see more of the United States this year.
I am so close to my family.  Last year was a hard year for us.  My grandmother (Nanny) ended up passing away around this time last year.   We take comfort  knowing that she is in a better place.
We celebrated my cousin, Chris’ wedding in October!   It was a sad that Nanny could not be there.  She was really looking forward to it.  She was going to wear something with lots of glitter!   My aunt and uncle live next door to my parents and we are a very close family.  We often do Sunday dinners together.  They know I don’t cook and always invite me over.   Priscilla, Chris’ bride, has been dating him since they were 16.  She was already like family, but now it is official!

My mom and me

Here is a picture of my parents, my brothers, my nephew, me, my brother’s girlfriend, and my brother Brett’s fiancee!   We will celebrate their wedding in April.
2014 will be another year of new beginnings.  I hope my family continues to grow and we continue to support one another.   I am so grateful for them and I am so lucky that I get to call them family.

That is so cool! I was near Stratton. Not sure the exact name of the town, but it had such adorable old houses. I think all of VT is beautiful.

Hi Erica! I see that you love to travel too. I have traveled to 45 countries and am currently living in South Korea teaching English. I loved traveling so much that I wanted to live overseas. I have a great travel organization to tell you about. I have gone on 3 tours with them, and it is specifically for teachers. There are no more than 15 people in a group, and I still talk to several of the people I have traveled with. Check them out at http://www.geeo.org/ and tell Jesse that Angela sent ya. And if you ever want to travel to South Korea, I have an extra bed!

📚 Back-to-school magic starts with the right read- 📚 Back-to-school magic starts with the right read-alouds!
These are my absolute favorite first-week books for building classroom community, easing those first-day jitters, and setting a positive tone from day one.
From Our Class is a Family, All Are Welcome, The Book of Rules, and so many more — these stories never miss.

Which one is a must-read in your classroom? Drop it in the comments and I will send you the links to my follow up activities!

I know I am next for a new student (I have 24 kids and everyone else has 25), so I am holding off until the night before the first day. I wish I could just wait but I like modeling where their bags and mail goes, both of which are set up using numbers.

True story: One year on the first day, I had a no show. Then I was assigned a new student. That student fit perfectly in the alphabetical order spot that was left. I should have played the lottery or something. What were the odds of that?!

5 things that are worth the money for your classro 5 things that are worth the money for your classroom!

1. A color printer. We don’t have color printers at school and this has saved me from having to remember to print something at home. I brought in mine from home and then bought a new one for home.
2. MacBookAir - This is my personal laptop. I bring it home on weekends and holidays but for the most part I keep it at school. I did need approval to get it on our district WiFi, which meant my phone could not also be on the WiFi. There is a one device per teacher rule.
3. A lay-flat binder for my plan book, dismissal binder, and sub binder. These save so much space and they are flexible.
4. A laminator at school and a laminator at home. It took me many years before I caved and bought another one but again, it saves me from remembering to laminate at home and I can also laminate during snack time and preps. Matte laminating is also worth the splurge.
5. My teacher toolbox! This toolbox has been with me for over 10 years, I just change out the labels to go with my decor theme. Everything has a place and it keeps my desk organized.

This was my room decor before the pastels. It worked well to incorporate my old farmhouse items (my decor theme before that) and as a bonus it made my Ukrainian students smile (the sunflower is the national flower of the Ukrainian).

Save and use leftover colored copies as dividers. This makes them less bulky, than if you had used binder clips.
When you near the end of the week, pull the papers from the tray and sort into the weekday drawers and centers.
