My Year in Review

This year had a few changes for me.   I moved to a new town.  It is this great, small, old town on the south shore of Long Island.  All the houses in this town have character and there are these beautiful lakes a few houses away from me.  I have been enjoying decorating and keeping with the character of my house.  I even started a home decor blog with my friend, Shannon, who lives in the same town.  The blog is not quite ready but our Instagram is up and running (Old_House_Charm).

I was very lucky to find an amazing tenant for my old little house.  I was a little sad to leave it but it is in good hands!  Can you believe all the snow we got last winter?!
I was able to meet up with so many more TpT and blog friends this past year.
I had a blast working at the 2015 Carson-Dellosa Blogger Summit.  I always love spending time with these lovely ladies and the Carson-Dellosa team are the best to work with.

The TpT conference is always a blast!

I had a Tri-State Blogger Meet-up at my house!
GoNoodle ask me and my friend, Erica V., to help host a GoNoodle meet-up in NYC.  It was so much fun.   I got to meet Hot Dog!

There was a TpT “un-conference” in NYC this fall.  I learned a lot and had a great time hanging out with these fun ladies.

I still teach first grade and despite changes in curriculum and the APPR teacher evaluation, I still love what I do.   I have been trying to create math centers to reinforce the concepts in the EngageNY math curriculum.  The kids love centers and they are practicing math skills.  Click on the pictures to check out the packets.

I am trying to finish up my Winter set of math centers!  But…
I really had plans to do so much more this week but life happens.  My little man, Niles, passed on this week.  It was the hardest thing I ever had to do but it was time.  He was 16 years old, blind, had congestive heart failure, and his organs were beginning to shut down.  I held him at the vet’s office as he passed on.  He was such a special dog and my heart is broken.   I take peace in the fact that he had a wonderful long life.

Thanks for checking in with me! I hope you have a great 2016.
And…

So sorry to hear about your pup. We just lost our cairn terrier 6 months ago to cancer. Remember you gave him the life most dogs can only dream of. I'm sure another dog will find a place in your heart. Wishing you a great 2016!

I understand how hard it is to lose a beloved pet whom you had loved for 16 years. You were such a loving fur momma and Niles appreciated every act of kindness you gave him. Thanks for making so many resources for my 1st grade kiddos to enjoy! Your Compassion @ Christmas resource was wonderful. I am trying to develop empathy and kindness with my students daily. Many aren't getting these valuable lessons at home.My
highlight this year was when you posted our picture together from Vegas and noted how sweet and kind I was. Kindness and sweetness are characteristics encouraged by my
beloved mother. God bless you this year, Erica in all your pursuits in life. Hugs from your #1 So Cal fan!!!!

📚 Back-to-school magic starts with the right read- 📚 Back-to-school magic starts with the right read-alouds!
These are my absolute favorite first-week books for building classroom community, easing those first-day jitters, and setting a positive tone from day one.
From Our Class is a Family, All Are Welcome, The Book of Rules, and so many more — these stories never miss.

Which one is a must-read in your classroom? Drop it in the comments and I will send you the links to my follow up activities!

How do you handle this situation? Do you put the How do you handle this situation? Do you put the new student at the end of the alphabetical list or do you start over with a new one?
I know I am next for a new student (I have 24 kids and everyone else has 25), so I am holding off until the night before the first day. I wish I could just wait but I like modeling where their bags and mail goes, both of which are set up using numbers.

True story: One year on the first day, I had a no show. Then I was assigned a new student. That student fit perfectly in the alphabetical order spot that was left. I should have played the lottery or something. What were the odds of that?!

5 things that are worth the money for your classro 5 things that are worth the money for your classroom!

1. A color printer. We don’t have color printers at school and this has saved me from having to remember to print something at home. I brought in mine from home and then bought a new one for home.
2. MacBookAir - This is my personal laptop. I bring it home on weekends and holidays but for the most part I keep it at school. I did need approval to get it on our district WiFi, which meant my phone could not also be on the WiFi. There is a one device per teacher rule.
3. A lay-flat binder for my plan book, dismissal binder, and sub binder. These save so much space and they are flexible.
4. A laminator at school and a laminator at home. It took me many years before I caved and bought another one but again, it saves me from remembering to laminate at home and I can also laminate during snack time and preps. Matte laminating is also worth the splurge.
5. My teacher toolbox! This toolbox has been with me for over 10 years, I just change out the labels to go with my decor theme. Everything has a place and it keeps my desk organized.

Save and use leftover colored copies as dividers. This makes them less bulky, than if you had used binder clips.
When you near the end of the week, pull the papers from the tray and sort into the weekday drawers and centers.
