This March I got a new classroom rug. It has gotten a lot of love on Instagram and a lot of questions from followers. I thought I would do a quick post to tell you about the carpet and where to get it.
I had always been bothered by the 20 plus year old, stained, classroom rug (see below) in primary colors that occupied the floor of my book nook area. I saw all those classrooms on Pinterest with their perfectly matching carpets and I wanted one, too.
The problem was that I just could not go to Ikea and buy a cheap one. My district has strict fire codes and only fire-retardant carpets are allowed. Fire-retardant also equals very expensive. So I lived with the carpet , I redid my whole classroom to farmhouse (see this blog post) and that kept me occupied. Then a year and a half after my switch to farmhouse, I decided I really wanted that new carpet to complete the look. I searched online and found my carpet on Amazon, it is by FlagShip Carpet and is called Handwriting Sampler . I went for the 7’6″ by 12′ sized carpet.
I decided to put a project up on DonorsChoose.org and see if anyone would donated towards a new classroom carpet. I was hoping for some sort of donation matching thing. No such luck, if I had only been a few weeks later I could have been part of that sweep of funded projects they had. I did get a few donations from donors but not nearly enough to fund the project. Hours before my Donors Choose project was set to expire, I went and funded the rest.
The new carpet came and it was a foot or so smaller than my other one but I actually liked that. I placed it so that none of the letters were under the shelves. The kids were super excited about the new carpet. Personally, I was and still am in love with this carpet. The quality of this carpet is amazing. My only complaint is that the cursive font is a bit odd for the letters S and T, but you know what, I don’t teach cursive. I also don’t plan on using the carpet as an instructional tool. I do assign seats in the Book Nook for instructional time, so I will say “so and so you sit on the letter c from now on.”
