October 14th Visual Plans – Pumpkins Continued

For my plan book format, check out this packet:
I am linking up with Deedee Wills for her Peek at the Week.

We are using my Short o Literacy Centers this week.  As well as the Words of the Week packet and Spelling Homework Menu.

Our science theme is still pumpkins.  I updated my pumpkin packet about four times last week!  So if you purchased, please check to see if you need to redownload.  I updated it because I am getting observed this week for math centers and I wanted math centers to go with the standards we just covered with Engage NY.  I am no expert on the Engage NY program, so please don’t ask me for advice.  I honestly don’t have any advice.  Maybe just to make sure to get math centers in somehow so that the math is not so dry for the kids.  Maybe by next school year I can be more of a help.  I am just trying my best to figure out what parts of the program to include.  There is no way I could fit all that they have in for a day into my day.  You can check out Engage NY for free online.

Here is a little post for my focus wall.  You can snag it for free by clicking the image.

The “Number Bond” math center above meets the standard: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.OA.B.4
Understand subtraction as an unknown-addend problem.  This center is from my Pumpkin packet. There are two versions of the number bond recording sheet to promote differentiation.  If you notice, for this version, the equal sign is not always positioned last.  I told the students that was to keep them on their toes and focused and not to let that trick them.

The “Ways to Make Ten” Center above meets the standard: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.OA.C.6
Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10.  This center is actually part of my Halloween Math Center packet.  I found these erasers at Target in the Dollar Spot!  I also have a version of this available in my pumpkin packet.  The version in my pumpkin packet also includes a “Ways to Make Ten Number Bond” recording sheet for early finishers.

This “Is it True” Center meets the standard: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.OA.D.7 Understand the meaning of the equal sign, and determine if equations involving addition and subtraction are true or false.  I originally included a work mat without the space to use manipulatives and some of my students could do the adding in their heads.  However, most of the students couldn’t, so then I updated the packet to include the work mat you see above.  The pumpkin counters are mini-erasers from Target’s Dollar Spot.

In addition to pumpkin themed centers this week, I picked a center from my Domino Math Center Packet.  I noticed Engage NY was using dominos and thought this center would help reinforce the skills taught in the math lesson.  I also have varying levels of this activity to promote differentiation.

Thanks for stopping by!

Did you just start using engageny this year? What are your favorite parts of the program? I love the number bonds and the fluency piece.

Thanks we started using it a little bit last year, but this year it is our whole math program. I agree the number bonds and fluency practice are worth while. I am struggling to make the copies and our copy machine is always running out of in.
