Engage NY First Grade Math Resources

I have gotten a ton of questions on my visual plan posts about how I utilize Engage NY in my classroom.   For those of you not familiar with the math program, you can check it out and download the whole program for free here.   The truth is that I am still trying to figure out how to fit it all in and what I can afford to skip.  My suggestion is to really read the lesson from the module.  Everything is right there.  Yes, the lesson would take you a SUPER long time.  Do what you can.  I try to alternate what I skip from the program.  Sometimes, we do the fluency practice at the end of the day.

I have made a few resources to make using Engage NY a bit easier.   I have included the link for the free download at the end of this post.

I placed the modules in separate binders and divided the topics with dividers.

I have included the math module binder covers and spines in the download at the end of this post.

One of the lessons we did this week required the students to use a number path.  It is similar to a number line.   I felt the students needed number paths they could reuse and created these.  You can download these number paths for free at the end of this post.

Another option would be to have the number paths on a work mat.  I have created a few versions of these work mats.  Use what works for you and your students.   I laminate the mats first.  Another option would be to place the sheets in page protectors.

Another useful mat to have, is this number bond mat.

Engage NY does not utilize Ten Frames but I feel they are useful.   I like to use ten frame work mats and counting chips for “Make a Ten to Add” lessons.   I also bought these ten frame stamps from Really Good Stuff.  I use them on the math pages where a ten frame could help the students.

I also love these ten frame paddles.   I got these from Amazon.com.  Here is my Amazon commissionable link.
I made these double ten frame mats.   They are included in the download.

I got to planning ahead a bit and added this Tens and Ones work mat to the download.

The file above also includes a 1-20 Number Path Freebie!

Here are a few videos I have in a folder on YouTube to help you.  I usually go to my teammate Janine Every with questions about the fluency activities.

An Instagram follower shared his districts homework help site with me.  Click the image for the link.
I hope this post helped you!  I will continue to create and post as I progress through the Engage NY Math Modules with my students.
I sell math center packets designed to supplement Engage NY.  You can check them out by clicking {HERE} or by clicking the specific images below:

This is my 2nd year teaching with the modules for 1st grade, it definitely gets better after the first year. I created quick checks, which our mini reviews that go with each topic in every module. I use them for review and quizzes to see how the kids do with each introduced skill. http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/First-Grade-Math-Modules-1-3-Quick-Checks-BUNDLE-1352052 Here is the link to the bundle for Modules 1-3, I have the rest in my TPT if interested. Also, I redid the mid module and end of module assessments. Just wanted to pass along if it might help. 🙂

Thank you SO much! This is our second year with Engage NY and although it's going much better, it can still be overwhelming. I so appreciate any visuals and hands-on supports for my students – thanks again! Jen

In the 2nd grade curriculum Engage NY has students using 10 frames. Actually, they expect them to already know how to use them. So incorporating this strategies in 1st grade would really help out your 2nd grade teachers. 🙂

    Thank you for the resources.

Wow! How are the kindergarten teachers doing at your school with engageny? I shared your page with the 1st grade teachers at my school. Is there a kindergarten teacher that has resources too? I can use several of your ideas because # bonds are big in the K modules. We had to implement Engageny ELA skills, Listening & Learning as well as Math this year. It has been overwhelming at times. I would appreciate any advice you can give!

Sorry, I don't know of any K teacher bloggers using it. We only have to use the math in our district.

    Thanks for your help.

We are using Eureka Math (which is basically the same thing). Do you have good resource for a baseline test I can use? Eureka doesn't have one and their end of the year assessments are way too much for beginning of the year first graders. Thanks!

Do you know of any resources for ELA – Engage New York 2nd grade. We started the program this year and I am looking for resources to make in more interesting for my students.

Could you share how long you take to do each lesson and what you include/don't include. I looked at your lesson plans but I know that just gives a general idea and I'm guessing you only do math centers two times a week during a different time as well then? We are planning on starting this program next year, so I'm just trying to get some ideas in my head to start this off right!

It usually takes about an hour for math. After doing the sprints the whole year, I realized they were not helping at all and went back to basic math sprints that I already had. I don't do the exit slips, there is just not enough time. Good luck and follow my blog for more resources coming soon.

Do you know of anyone using it in 5th grade? I would love to hear some thoughts from a teacher that has used it – I am thinking about using it next year.

My kids are doing much better with ENY now that we use Zearn. I do my math block in two groups – one does Zearn while I do the application problem, problem set and some fluency work with a small group; then we switch. I am feeling much more confidant about it meeting their needs than I did when I just following the books.
