First, I want to thank all of you for the outpouring of support. I made it through Hurricane Sandy safely with minimal property damage. My power was out for the storm but came back a day later. I am still without internet and cable. I am typing this from my parents’ house. Unfortunately, the rest of Lindenhurst, the town I live in and teach in, did not do as well. I have included some of my photographs and news clip for you to see the devastation. The National Guard is here because there is fear of looting. Traffic lights are still out and power lines litter the the streets. There is a severe gasoline shortage. People are without homes, without heat, and without electricity. We have been out of school all week. We may start again on Monday depending on the power situation. When we do go back, I know the students will be talking about the hurricane. Therefore, I decided to create a hurricane unit so that I could make this a learning experience. Click the picture below to check it out. All the proceeds of this unit will go to a hurricane relief fund for the people of Lindenhurst, Long Island, NY.
To all my North-Eastern friends, I hope you made it through the storm, too. My thoughts and prayers are with all of those affected.

I am on Long Island as well. No flooding by me (north shore). But where I teach in Brooklyn many teachers lost their homes, including my principal. It is hard for us all. We will also be collecting especially for our teachers who lost everything in Breezy Point… Glad to see everyone is helping each other out!
