Cameo Silhouette Created Bathroom Hand-Sanitizer Passes

Yes, I made this!!!  Really cool right?!  
Let me start by saying that I was freaking out about not having a bathroom in my classroom this year.  This means that my firsties will be going down the hall to use the school bathroom and I won’t be there to say “Did you wash?”  I am one of those germ-a-phobic teachers and I loved having the bathroom in my classroom.   With the bathroom right there, I could make sure they washed their hands and I could teach the students proper bathroom safety measures (flush with your foot, use the paper towel to open the door, sing happy birthday while you wash, etc.).   I saw this lovely idea of using hand-sanitizer as bathroom passes on Pinterest and it led me to 3rd Grade Thoughts‘ post, A Better Bathroom Pass.   This is a genius idea if you ask me!  I am going to make hand-sanitizers for the boys, too of course.  This one really should say “Girls’ Bathroom” but at the time I made it I was thinking only one girl would use it at a time, but really she would still be going to the “Girls’ Bathroom.” So disregard the grammar error.  I also think I will make “Snack Sanitizer,” “Lunch Sanitizer,” and “Hani-tizer.”  
*Please, note that hand-sanitizer is not as effective as hand-washing and I am going to make sure they know to wash their hands in the bathroom before exiting.  I am also going to get permission from the parents for their child to use hand-sanitizer.  If you use hand-sanitizer in your classroom, be sure to model the proper amount to use and remind the students not to touch their eyes right after. 
How I made it
First, I got this amazing machine called the Silhouette Cameo.  Silhouette offers an educators discount and you get a $10 gift card for the Silhouette Store with it.  
Next, I went to my favorite supply store, Big Lots and bought these hand-sanitizers.  It was really easy to peel of the front label.  The back label was kinda hard to get off and I had to use Goo Gone to get it off.  Love that stuff 🙂
Then, I went into my Silhouette studio and typed up Girl’s Bathroom and added dots.  It was really easy to do and I decided to turn the word “bathroom” so that it fit better on the bottle. I used Wish I Were Taller font and Smiley Monster font – both by KevinandAmanda.com. 
I sent the image from my computer to my Cameo and it did all the work.  I used pink vinyl sheets and I used the cutting mat.  You don’t have to use the cutting mat but it seems to work better when I do.   Click below to check out the vinyl starter kit I purchased. 

I used the tools to peel of the excess vinyl and then applied the transfer paper. 

I transfered the image to the hand-sanitizer.  It was actually really easy.  
I thought it needed a little something more, so I had the Cameo cut some black vinyl dots.  Easy!  I know I am going to love using my Cameo.  I am already thinking of making my whole family personalized tumblers.  The possibilities are endless.

  1. I also saw on Pinterest where they placed a strong hair tie around the pump part of the neck so that the students don't pump too much sanitizer into their hands

  3. Due to the cute and eye appealing look of the bottle, your students "will" want to use hand-sanitizer :>)
    I have a nurse that comes in (brings all hand washing supplies) and we all properly wash our hands. She also teaches us how to use sanitizer; it is important to make sure to keep rubbing your hands together until they are dry.

  4. My first graders love getting to use hand sanitizer. I noticed last year that many of them had these little mini sanitizer bottles from Bath and Body Works clipped on their back packs and at the end of the day when we line up for dismissal they start squirting them into each others hands which was nice, not just because they were de-germing but because it usually leaves me room smelling fruity and clean! In any event your kids will like these and I would LOVE a Cameo!!

  17. Great idea! I've never had a bathroom in my classroom…you were lucky! Where do you keep the sanitizers in between bathroom times? I'm sure you're kids go in partners…do you have a sanitizer pass for each of them?

  27. I like the idea of how you made the label for the bottle. It can be also good giveaways for parties and special occasions. Anyway, it is nice of you to teach your students in using a hand sanitizer after going to the restroom. As young as they are, they can develop the practice of cleaning their hands that is part of a proper hygiene.
