Daisy, My New Guinea Pig From Petsmart!

As many of you know, my beloved classroom pet, Molly, died after 9 long years with me.  She was an amazing guinea pig and I wrote a tribute to her on my blog (click here to read).  Somehow, J’Lyn at Petsmart read my blog post and contacted me with an incredible offer!  She sent me a $250 dollar gift card and set up a consultation in my local Petsmart to purchase a guinea pig.  Yesterday, I went to Petsmart with my mother and nephew, Dylan.  We picked out an adorable baby guinea pig and named her Daisy.  The manager at Petsmart and the staff were all so wonderful to us.  I cannot thank them enough, or Petsmart for their generosity.  Thank you, Petsmart for making a lot of students very happy.  I hope you enjoy the photos below.

Thanks everyone! Yes, guinea pigs are pretty hardy and are great class pets because they are up during the day and rarely bite. Right now Daisy is terrified of me, but she has not tried to bite me. With time she will get used to me and being in a classroom. Though, I won't bring her in until, I get the students all settled down.

I have a guinea pig name patches that I rescued and I teach Kindergarten at a school in Detroit. I was wondering 1. How long you wait before you bring the guinea pig in? 2. How you teach the students about it? 3. How do you let the parents know that you will be bringing one in (in terms of allergies and all of that). My school gave me the go ahead as long as there are no allergies etc. Any advice you have would be great. I would love to incorporate my new family member into the classroom.

    Hi Erica,
I've been the very proud owner of two female guinea pigs since last January. Their names are Daisy and Lilly and we love them dearly. I'm wondering where on earth you get the adorable costumes we've seen on Molly (Bless her little soul). My guinea pigs came into my life entirely because of you and Molly. I wanted to say "thank you" for that. You are truly an inspiring teacher!

Thanks Dianne! I made some of them, a class mom made the Wonderpet one, and the clown one is from EBay! My two piggies will not wear costumes!
