Money Poems with Counting Points

I love Touch Math, but I have to say, Touch Money is amazing!  My first grade students are finally able to combine and count money.  My math specialist and the ABA teachers at my school introduced me to Touch Math last year.  We currently use Houghton Mifflin math.  I use Math Centers and the Touch Math program as a supplement to my math program.  It works well for addition and subtraction, but it is an excellent resource for teaching students about money!  Each coin is assigned a certain number of touch points, with each touch point equalling 5.  Pennies are not assigned a touch point, they have a line under them.  The students need to be able to count by 5’s before they can master combining the coins.

The easiest tip for utilizing the Touch Math program would be to have the students draw touch points on the coins on their worksheets and then count by fives to find the total value.
I made these posters using poems, I saw online years ago.  Click (here) to get the posters, I have also included a plain white version of the posters.

As a center, I have them sort a bag of coins and record the value using the worksheet below.  Make sure to download the file to print.

Thanks for sharing! I will definitely be using the poems in my class. I love that they describe the appearance of the coins. My K kids have trouble understanding the worth of a coin is not related to it's size!

Those are the same poems we use with our kiddos! We use funny voices and have some hand motions to spice them up a little too. Love them!

Here is a great poem I use to teach my kindergarteners the value of the coins.
    Pennies worth ONE cent
    Nickles worth FIVE
    Dimes worth TEN cents
    and Quarters TWENTY FIVE!!

Can you tell me what math centers you use with your money unit? My math program starts with mixed coins and based on my pre assessment- I need to supplement and possibly use my own resources to each this unit. Thanks for any advice

Are you able to repost the last worksheet? I can't download it and I would love to use it as a center. Thanks!

Drop a 🎃if your class visited the pumpkin patch th Drop a 🎃if your class visited the pumpkin patch this week!

I absolutely LOVED that our PTA made it free this year. It made all 25 students very happy. How does your school handle the pumpkin patch.

Many years ago when TpT was at its peak, I thought Many years ago when TpT was at its peak, I thought of leaving and becoming a full time teacher-author. But there were way too many reasons for me not to, like that I loved my job, that I was single, that being a teacher in NY meant I had good benefits, tenure, and a pension. So I brushed that thought off and continued on teaching. I continued on sharing resources with you and worked at a pace that was reasonable for someone teaching full-time and navigating life’s challenges.
My heart goes out to all the teachers who did leave and have became teacher entrepreneurs. I know you are struggling with what to do now that TpT has changed their parameters. I wish you success in whatever you decide.
But this post is for all the teachers in classrooms who have stuck with me, asked my thoughts, and wondered what I was going to do next. Well, I’m not changing a thing because I have only ever sold digital teaching resources on TpT and I will continue to do so.
I want to thank you for your continued support your likes, comments, and shares always make my day. I love being able to share teaching resources with you and hopefully I have saved you time and maybe made you laugh once in a while. ❤️Erica
